Who is in charge of enforcing a child support order?

The child support enforcement services are provided by the North Carolina Division of Social Services. NC DSS is a part of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. There are county offices all across the state providing enforcement services to NC residents.

Age of Emancipation

18 is the age of emancipation in NC. A support order will continue past the 18th birthday if the child is still in high school. If the 18th birthday has passed but the child is still in high school the order may continue until age 20 or completion of high school, whichever occurs earlier. See NC General Statute Chapter 50-13.4.

Statute of Limitations to enforce a child support order

NC General Statute Chapter 1-47 provides for 10 years from when the last installment was due.

Interest

Interest on Judgments shall be at the legal rate of 8% as defined in NC General Statute Chapter 24.
